About the Village Hall (Registered charity No 514206)

Village Hall

The present Village Hall was built in 1967 to replace the old wooden hut which had previously been used as a village hall and was situated behind Gentleshaw Primary School. When it was decided that the school needed to be enlarged a compulsory purchase order was made on the land on which the old hall, or “Stute” as it was fondly known, stood and consequently much fundraising was done to provide the funds necessary for the building of a new Village Hall. The land on which the Hall stands originally belonged to the Marquis of Anglesey as part of the estate of Beaudesert. This land had been bought by Mr Charles Wootton, a local businessman, who lived at Chestall House and who kindly donated the area of land to the village for the purpose of building the new hall.

An addition to the building was made in 1972 with the building of the Snooker Room at the rear side. This facility was a great improvement on the old snooker area in the “Stute” where the proximity of the heating stoves meant that some shots entailed getting a singed “derriere”.

Over the years the Hall has undergone several improvements to its facilities including a new heating system, new kitchen, double glazing and UPVC external doors, wall and roof insulation and complete electrical rewiring. The Hall has easy access for all with the provision of a ramp to the front door and a new disabled toilet.

The latest renovation work carried out was the replacement of the flat roof above the snooker room along with the renewing of the under-felt on the bottom of both sides of the sloping roof and the re-mortaring of both gables. Besides using it’s own finances much of the funding for this work has come from Staffordshire County Council, Awards for Hall lottery funding, Cannock Wood & Longdon Parish Councils and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust. The Village Hall management committee are very grateful for all of the help they have received. Future plans are for the installation of security measures and the resurfacing of the car park.

The Village Hall consists of a large hall measuring 50ft x 30ft with a separate raised stage area of 30ft x 12ft. Leading off the large hall is a smaller hall/meeting room which measures 25ft x 25ft. Adjoining this room is a kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, kettle and urn, and good working surfaces. There are refurbished gents toilets, a disabled toilet and ladies toilets/cloakroom. All of these facilities are approached by double doors leading into a foyer area.

At the side is located the snooker room with separate access and also access to toilet facilities.

The Hall plays host to many village organisations including Womens Institute, Floral Art Club, Rainbows Brownies and Guides, Gardening Club, Whist Club and others.

The Hall has an active management committee who are keen to promote various events in the hall, not only to raise funds for the upkeep of the hall, but also to provide family entertainment for local people. These include dances, games evenings, quizzes and much more. Please keep an eye open for details of future shows and events.

The Hall is available for hire for Wedding Receptions, Family Parties, Dances, Meetings etc. Comfortable seating capacity is 120 for functions using tables and chairs and 140 for a theatre style layout. A bar can be provided if required. There is also an adjacent field where we host caravan rallies who use the hall for their entertainment. Water and chemical toilet disposal facilities are available. If you want a venue for your event, whatever it may be, please contact us to see if we can help.
