Cannock Wood and Gentleshaw Musical Society

Cannock Wood and Gentleshaw Musical Society, or CWAGMS as it is affectionately called by its members and supporters, was formed in 1977 by a local man, the lateTerry Burns, and has grown to a well known group consisting of 55 members ranging in age from 14 – 72 years.

They also have a junior section with 25 local children who perform alongside and with the main group.

The Society has a busy working and social calendar performing two main shows a year at The Prince of Wales Theatre in Cannock taking place each May and December.

In July the group performs “Music in the Park” at Beaudesert Scout & Guide Camp where people enjoy a wonderful summer’s evening of musical performances and picnicking rounded off with a spectacular Firework Display set to stirring classical music.

In addition to this CWAGMS perform concerts at churches and halls throughout the year, both locally and in some instances much further afield, helping to raise thousands of pounds for various charities.

Cannock Wood Snooker Club

Cannock Wood Snooker Club came into existence shortly after World War 1 when an ex army timber hut was bought by the villagers of Cannock Wood and Gentleshaw as a village hall were dances and other similar activities took place. Enough room was found within the hut too accommodate two full size snooker tables. This worked well apart from the fact that the hall was heated by coke burning stoves and if one was playing a shot from the baulk end of the table one had to be careful not to get one’s rear end too close to the stoves.

During 1961 the land on which the hut was sited was compulsory purchased to enable extensions to be made to Gentleshaw School so the hut had to be demolished. A new village hall was built on land in Buds Road which had at one time belonged to the Marquis of Anglesey and had been bought by Mr Charles Wootton who lived at Chestall House. Mr Wootton donated the plot of land to the village for the purpose of building a new village hall. This was completed in 1967 and the snooker club continued to flourish.

In 1972 the present snooker room was built as an addition to the village hall. Two second hand snooker tables, in splendid condition, were purchased by the Village Hall committee on behalf of the Snooker Club. One was, and still is, a magnificent slate bedded walnut framed table purchased from a resident of Gnosall near Stafford. The other table, with oak framing, was purchased from Cannock Snooker Hall. The new room was opened by Rex Williams, at the time World Billiards Champion.

For some time the club competed in the Wolverhampton Billiard League and also the Rugeley and District Snooker League. As the years passed committees came and went but some of the names who worked hard for the club are Terry Burns, Percy Craddock, Sam Wilkes, Phil Borton, Ken Lockett, Ken Topping, Jim Cornes and Frank Short.

In 2001, thanks to the efforts of Frank Short and other club members, a grant of £1,700 was successfully applied for from the National Lottery “Awards for All” scheme which enabled both tables to be renovated with beds and cushions recovered and also the purchase of two new sets of snooker balls and other ancillary equipment.

The village hall has a Snooker Room that is the envy of many halls around.

The Snooker Room is available to club members at any reasonable time during day and night apart from Wednesday afternoons when members of the Evergreen Club use the facilities.

Club membership is currently £5.00 per year with a joining fee of £5.00 for new members. Juniors (under 18) pay £2.50 and can play providing they are accompanied by a senior member.

Cannock Wood Whist Club

The Cannock Wood Whist Club, formed in February 2008, meets twice each month – on the first Monday and on the third Tuesday – in the Village Hall to play the card game of Whist. Some think that this is a game that has gone out of fashion but the people of Cannock Wood and Gentleshaw think otherwise with the evenings increasing in popularity as word gets around the area.

The evening is suitable for all ages and all levels of player, be they beginners, improvers or experienced players.

Refreshments are served, there is a raffle and there are cash prizes to be won.

Doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start and entrance is just £3.00 per player. There is plenty of parking available and there is no need to book – just turn up on the night.

For any enquiries telephone Pat on 01543 683670
