Best Kept Village Competition
Published 11 August 2009
After a break of several years it was decided that the time was right and that Cannock Wood should enter the Best Kept Village Competition once again. This entailed making sure that the village and its surroundings was kept free of litter and that roads and paths were lept tidy. This was accomplished by volunteers doing regular litter picks and generally keeping an eye on the village. Villagers also helped by keeeping their gardens and properties tidy. 63 villages entered this years competition and judging took place between May and July with the county split up into different districts. The results were announced at a presentation evening in the County Buildings, Stafford. Let us hope that next year we can improve our position. Thanks go to everyone who helped in any way and a special thank you to Maureen Allen for co-ordinating the entry.
Cannock Chase Ramblers visit Blithfield Reservoir
Published 11 August 2009
Public access to much of the shoreline of the Blithfield Reservoir is normally prevented due to the needs of wildlife (mainly the visiting birds), anglers and sailing club.
The annual walk by the Footpath Society is therefore a unique opportunity for many people to see at closer quarters this delightful part of Staffordshire.
On Wednesday 5th August a group of around thirty people walked from the Butter Cross in Abbots Bromley to circumnavigate the easterly section of the reservoir. During the course of this they crossed both the dam and the causeway. They enjoyed a fine dry evening for their 6 mile excursion.
This occasional access was by special permission.
